Independent accessibility statement by
- The Word Bank tool is devised to support the understanding of key terms in a site’s text by providing dynamically generated links to simple Flash movies with sound.
- The application makes use of JavaScript in a user’s browser and whilst it is dependent on that technology being active in the users agent, pages ‘degrade’ gracefully if JavaScript is turned off and users will be given further information using the no-script tag. So whilst the tool is unavailable without JavaScript there is no negative impact on the site as a result.
- Currently WordBank is not set up to aid users who solely use screen readers to navigate a WordBank enabled site. However the dynamic generation of the links means that there ability to read the screen is not impeded by any extraneous coding. As advised by earlier consultations¸ the current WordBank pop-ups provide an HTML text definition of the words but doesn’t attempt a long description of the Flash animation. It was felt this would not be a useful or used feature. The animations are however accompanied by a sound file that backs up the visual element of the movie.
- In general WordBank is an ongoing development that supports literacy and in doing so makes every effort to be accessible to as many web users as possible given the limits of the technology and the cost. The work has been undertaken in good faith.
